Tillandsia brachycaulous velutina is a variant of Tillandsia brachycaulos. They both feature wide, thick, leaves and a star shaped form. The coloring of b. velutina ranges from soft sage green, to bright lime green, with a transition to a blush of pink to red as it matures. The leaves of the b. velutina are more of a velvety soft to the touch instead of the smooth waxy texture of brachycaulos. When in bloom, the flower spike is a brilliant and spectacular bright red.
