Aechmea ludmaniana 'Mend'

Aechmea lueddemanniana 'Mend' is a cultivar of lueddemanniana.) This complicated  name is derived from a combination of the M, for Mildred Merkel, the E, for Edward Ensign who sowed the seed, the N. for Julian Nally who gave the seed to Ensign, and finally, the D in memory of Ralph Davis. This albo-marginated cultivar has lime green leaves with creamy white margins that become bright pink-red in good light. It has become very popular in South Florida not only because of it's great appearance but because of its hardiness, especially in landscaping where it can take quite a lot of direct sun before experiencing leaf burn. It can grow quite large up to 30" across at maturity.
